Racism has always been a part of our culture but former President Donald Trump has emboldened the racists in our country. He has literally sent a message that racism is acceptable as can be attested by the recent outbreak of violence against Asian Americans. I, personally, have been indirectly affected by this outbreak.

Trump has shown his racist tendencies by discriminating against people of color in renting his properties; strongly advocating for the conviction of the Central Park Five, who were ultimately found innocent and he then still said they were guilty; embracing birtherism; degrading African nations; telling some congresswomen of color to go back to where they came from; and referring to Mexican immigrants as drug dealers and rapists.

More recently, he has implied that China is responsible for the spread of COVID-19, labelling it the “China virus.” This has led to many incidences of violence against Asian Americans. Trump’s words are, at the least, partially responsible for the increased incidence of racial violence in our country. The FBI has data that clearly show an increase in prejudice when being exposed to Trump’s rhetoric.

There are experiments to show that people in authority have a direct influence on people’s actions. The Milgram obedience experiment is one of the best-known examples of people being influenced by authority figures. Thus, it would appear that Trump has to bear some responsibility for the current racial violence in our country.
