Top trainer Clayton Harmey and teenage driver Jack Callaghan claimed their first group 1 victory when comeback pacer Kanye Crusader caused an upset in the Hunter Region Championship Final (2030 metres) at Newcastle Paceway on Saturday night. Kanye Crusader, an outsider at $17 on the TAB, was taken to the lead from gate four by Callaghan. The four-year-old gelding, which Cessnock trainer Harmey reluctantly put back into work late last year when he returned to his stable from part-owner Brian Hamilton, then held the front throughout. The Lisa McDonald-trained Master Catch, driven by Callaghan’s father, Mark, made an early move three-wide to sit outside Kanye Crusader. He pushed late for the win along with the Adam Ruggari-trained Hazelnuts, but Kanye Crusader lifted late to win the $100,000 race by a half-neck from Master Catch in a 1:58:0 mile rate. Harmey’s other qualifier, Western Heir ($6.50), sat behind Kanye Crusader from the gate one start and he finished fourth. It was a fairy-tale win for Harmey, who admitted before the final that he gave away Kanye Crusader early in 2019 to Tamworth trainer Richie Williams. Harmey bred the gelding but said he failed to live up to expectations early in his career. “I didn’t like him,” Harmey said before the final. “He was a disappointment to his family, because I love his mum, Khloe. She’s had four foals and they’ve all won races for me. “As a two-year-old he showed me he was going to be good, and then he wasn’t. “It’s only because of Brian that he’s back. I use Brian’s truck and when he took him back from Tamworth, I used to say to my workers that the only reason he is here is because of the truck. “He was in the paddock and Brian said to put him back into work, to my dislike, and here we are. “He proved me wrong, he’s done a good job.” In the main consolation race, Bobs Farm trainer Geoff Harding claimed the trifecta with Roll With Lachlan beating Rocknlachlan and Jasper Styles. Barry Matterson-trained Babyitscold won the B consolation from Audace and Yayas Hot Heart.
